If You Bought It In Memphis
Growing up, Memphis was the "big city." A trip there was an adventure. A glimpse at the urban panorama you saw on the 6 o'clock news. If you drove out of my small town to the levee you could JUST pick up WDIA on the car radio. With Stax and Hi and Al Green and Isaac Hayes we imagined that music was pouring out of every brick in Memphis. (It may have been.)
This painting is back from a summer vacation at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
Here's a short video about this painting:

To GO there, and to poke around and see what you could see, that was an experience. Information was a lot more difficult to come by. You'd rely on some fragment of a radio ad you'd heard or thirdhand rumors or something from the Commercial Appeal.
By then our town had a mall with a music store, but to buy a tape RECORDED in Memphis AT A STORE IN MEMPHIS...
Well, that was something.
