Em Campbell is a fine art painter, teacher, and writer, who specializes in water-based media with themes derived the natural world.

How I work: Creating with water-based media is challenging due to the characteristic unpredictability. Pigments given enough water will not always do as directed. Beginning with watercolor was difficult as a newbie painting, but the lack of control created some amazing surprises in my early work. Later, I moved to using gouache paints for more detailed and predictable results. Gouache is an opaque, water-based paint that behaves much like watercolor. My signature layered world pieces, however, are made with India inks and luck. There truly isn’t a more unpredictable medium than ink deployed via beads of water. Each layer dries however it pleases, leaving me to adapt my original goals or quit the project. Most of the time, I persist. The work shown here is the fruit of that perseverance.
