Sunset beach wave
The warm and bright light of a sunset is captured in this oil painting with the contrasting green and blue of a wave that lifts water with strength and rendered with thick impasto and brushstrokes that are left to tell the story of the moment. The figures give a playful feeling and their casting shadows create abstraction and an intriguing design to the composition. A special moment in the beach that captures the viewer with all its color and tactile quality

An idyllic beach scene told in rich natural hues of luscious oil paint, Paola Luther’s Sunset beach wave is a dreamy and intensely humanistic landscape. The tonal variations are wildly complex and masterfully mixed. Each color seems to contain shades of every other, with the reflections of the sun, water, and frolicking people brilliantly inscribed on the mirror-like sand.
Sunset beach wave conveys a powerful sense of joy and freedom. The figures playing in the gold-inflected surf are entirely at one with nature, liberated from the concerns of everyday life, fully engaged with the moment, and momentarily unshackled from anxieties of the future.
Yellows and blues form the chromatic foundation of the work and come together in deep shades of bright solar gold and aquatic blues and greens. These rich organic hues make the painting glow with a wild energy that is both calming and enlivening.
Sunset beach wave is a celebration of life that does not separate humanity from nature but instead harmoniously marries people and the environment. All too often, our relationship with the natural world is opportunistic. We can see the earth as a collection of resources we use to power society instead of a partner in the continued growth and existence of the human race. Sunset beach wave rejects this exploitative relationship and establishes nature as our home, not the means to power our home. Luther employs her immense artistic talent to paint an alternative, respectful, and mutually beneficial vision of humans’ relationship with the world in which they live.

I keep returning to the emotive impact of the work. So much can be felt and understood from an everyday scene captured by an artist who sees the vast metaphorical potential of a moment in time.
