Natalie Pivoney’s Garfield St. exudes a familiarity that brings to mind a sense of home despite the viewer's origins. I grew up in a small two-bedroom apartment in New York, where my parents still reside. In short, my childhood home (and the one I most associate with the concept) was about as far removed from the domicile depicted in Garfield St. as possible. So, the connection I have to the work's subject is entirely by virtue of Pivoney’s masterful brushwork, not visual association. Garfield St.'s house is by no means necessarily the artist's residence. In fact, based on her description, I think it is probably that of a stranger. However, the empathy and air of universality with which Pivoney approaches the picture imparts a powerful sense of domestic familiarity and all the melancholy, safety, stability, and desire it entails.
