Light is the basis of perception. The sun is not just in the sky but all around us, constantly transforming everything we see with its reflective power. Despite the title, Ellen Nemetz’s Feather Afloat’s protagonist is the sun. The feather serves to ground the picture and give the viewer visual context, but it is still an adornment to the panoply of color upon which they float. The fluid contours and ever-changing swirling vortexes of color are not just revealed by light but created by it. They are whirlpools of reflections that seem more at home in fantasy than reality. But the magic playing out on the river’s surface is omnipresent. After staring long enough at Feather Afloat, one can begin to hear the flow of the water and become lost in its contemplative lullaby.
