Chad Serhal was born in Michigan City, Indiana on October 25th, 1981. He lived in north east Kentucky from 1984 to 1987, Huntington, West Virginia from 1987 to 1989, and Kokomo, Indiana from 1990 to 2000. He was originally a musician, heavily involved in the local music scene in Indiana, toured extensively from 2002 to 2004, and then off and on until 2008. He became extremely interested in film, which led him to cartooning as a sequential art form of filmmaking. He drew short graphic novels for 12 years until he started writing novels without the images. Unsatisfied, he began editing and reappropriating movies. He collected and cut movie stills, gluing them on objects and furniture, and collaged designs in order to generate material for show flyers, cover art and other visual advertising and merchandise, but then started making stand alone collages with the materials around 2014. He fell in love with the art form and had his first collage show in the summer of 2016 and has been making small collages ever since.

Serhal earned his audio engineering certificate from The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona in 2005 and interned at Signet Soundelux Studios in West Hollywood, California doing post-production score. He attended the Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky from 2008 to 2010. There he worked with the Restoration Movement Archives in the Young Library, at the local radio station WUGO, and interned at the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, West Virginia researching Appalachian Folk Art. He finished his undergraduate degree at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 2016, studying film history and studio art. There he worked as a night porter of a men’s house for drug and alcohol addiction recovery and a landscaper of an Arabian horse farm. Between undergrad and grad school he worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a program associate director of a community arts center.
