This award-winning painting was inspired by a recent trip to the Shallotte River Swamp, about an hour's drive from my home. We took a guided tour in a canoe through the black water swamp. The reflections were amazing.

This is a one of a kind artwork. I always sign my work on the back and usually on the front as well. You will receive a certificate of authenticity with your piece of art.

Joy Parks Coats’ "Patterns of Reflections" is a peaceful and meditative painting that uses a near photo-realistic style to capture abstraction found in the natural world. Abstraction seems antithetical to forms found in the real world and particularly opposed to representation in a visually realistic painterly approach. The lightly rippling water of "Patterns of Reflections", however, gives the lie to this perception with the distorted and abstracted trees reflected on its surface. These warped reflections wind their way to the foreground and culminate in almost completely abstract meandering blue lines. Reflections of defused light and shadow serve to further abstract the highly figurative image. With this in mind, the appeal of abstraction becomes clearer; our world is full of illusions and distortions that are as abstract as any abstract expressionist painting. Abstraction allows artists to explore these deviations of perception.
