Kurtis Brand’s "Samu – Natural Pill Yellow with Orange Frame" is an intriguing work that blurs the lines between painting, tapestry, and sculpture by making the work’s environment an integral part of its visual make-up. By cutting the canvas, Brand establishes the wall on which it hangs as inseparable from the canvas itself. The wall, visible through the slits, becomes part of the work; a picture is defined by what transpires in its frame, and the negative space of the cuts consumes whatever is behind it. In this way, the work leaves the two-dimensional realm of painting and moves into the three-dimensional realm of sculpture.
"Samu – Natural Pill Yellow with Orange Frame" finds inspiration in the work of Italian artist, Lucio Fontana. Similarly, Fontana carved slits into his canvases to bring art and the physical world into a closer union and expand and obscure the traditional definitions of artistic mediums.
