II was inspired by the Italian artist, Pozzo's ceiling fresco in St Ignatius in Rome when I was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. I have a large reproduction in the studio, from which I take ideas of color and composition while infusing my work with a contemporary flair.

Gina Werfel’s "Ceiling" is a striking and many-hued Allover painting (paintings that utilize the entire breadth of the canvas) with a soft calming palette balanced out by a chaotic and excited composition. Joyful flourishes of the paintbrush culminate in explosive twisting lines of color that dance and intertwine playfully across the surface of the canvas. The sheer madness of the composition would lose its visual accessibility and become too convoluted to enjoy, were it not for the layers and drips of light-toned paint in the center. The freewheeling brushwork, swirling pirouettes of color, and cheerful palette provide the viewer with unbridled and effervescent excitement.

Lighthearted, fun, and visually alluring, "Ceiling" is a delightful romp through an abstract maelstrom of ecstatic pigment.
