This is a beautiful piece of contemporary abstract art, with a wonderful sense of composition and movement.

Produced with acylic and pencil, the thoughtful lines evoke ships hulls, and roofs of shanties roofs by the sea shore. The use of colour is Rothkoesque, if as he had a calm day at the beach (!) with their gentle warm blues and sublte calming limes. The texture of the paint also evokes painted wood work, adding to a nautical feel, as well as a wonderful sense of movement.

Compositionally there are nods to Sean Scully's early abstracts, who also used constrasting yellow and blues, for which he is known, although again this is much lighter and bouyant in feeling, and feels unique in its more pastel tones.

The daring pops of bright reds and midnight blues are a wonderful contrast and are reminscent of Wolfgang Tillman's photography experimentation, where he used salts to add unusual bursts of contrasting colour, and add an unexpected and unique bent to this painting.

Thank. you Claire for your insightful review. As an intuitive abstractionist I never know what's about to happen when I create new work. It's after the piece is completed that I learn more about it and what's on and in my mind. I made "Inside" during the summertime in a hot studio in Los Angeles. I hadn't painted in a while but I had been generating a lot of ideas and new conceptions and writing more then painting. I think I captured this metaphor of an incoming idea looking for a place to anchor in this piece.
