A couple things have been happening with me and my art lately. Maybe it’s a sign of creative evolution or the beginnings of a new phase, but I find myself pulling out older works and adding additional work to them, and I also find myself attracted to the minimalist genre. This piece was originally “finished” in 2013 when I basically gave up on it. I wasn’t happy with the results and it sat in storage until about two weeks ago. I feel I’ve evolved enough as an artist that I can see possibilities in works that at one time had me stumped. It’s interesting that those possibilities are to simplify.

W.S. Cranmore’s Open Air is a richly painted color study told with calming and organic brushwork. Lines and symmetry define the present work. However, it does not adhere to a strict minimalist structure or the hardline abstraction often associated with the movement. Instead, Cranmore takes a gestural approach to minimalism that maintains freedom of line and gesture while remaining faithful to a geometric structure. Open Air is not expressionistic but simultaneously not austere and inflexible. It has a natural appearance that indicates painterly freedom and a rejection of all categorizations and inhibition. The tonally balanced bars of color exist autonomously while working in harmony. They do not compete with each other but, instead, accentuate the richness and impact of each hue.
