Guy Augeri’s beguiling abstract photograph, SWIRL OR LICK ME LIKE A LOLLIPOP, is an amorphous evocation of life and movement. Reminiscent of László Moholy-Nagy’s ethereal photos of the 1920s, the present work pushes the boundary of perhaps the most figurative artistic medium: photography (I include moving image art in this category, and one need look no further than Moholy-Nagy’s fellow Bauhaus artist, Hans Richter to find equally abstract films). Defying the expectations of a photographic representation, Augeri adjusts his lens and exposure to capture an image as abstract as any painting. Many things can be read into this photo, but what stands out most is a sense of motion. The twisting and snaking shapes that wind their way across the picture's surface do not capture movement so much as they capture the concept of movement. SWIRL OR LICK ME LIKE A LOLLIPOP is a snapshot of life’s endless fluidity.
