Composed of gestural and organic forms, Joelle Mayer’s Circles on blue lives and breathes the aquatic and natural. The enigmatic blues, yellows, reds, whites, and greens have a lovely softness that relaxes the viewer and draws them into a space of immense aesthetic comfort. The bubble-like circular forms dominating the canvas are not interrupted by hard-edged shapes or distracting figuration. Instead, they exist in complete harmony with the emotive, spontaneous yet deliberate abstract brushstrokes that describe and surround them. The sense of life is palpable, the forms are unantagonizing but uncompromising, and Circles on blue gives more than it takes. It is a window into tranquility, a respite from the noisy chaos of the world, and a pictorial representation of submerging oneself in the peaceful quietude of water.
