Natalie Pivoney’s 111 E. Simmons St. is a stark cityscape captured in rich hues. A desolate urban landscape ripe with a beautiful melancholy, the present work captures a scene that feels devoid of human life. From the pavement coating the forgotten ground to the telephone poles jutting into the light-polluted sky, a human touch is omnipresent. Still, the street feels abandoned and as robbed of human life as the land is from nature. However, vestiges of each remain: the light on the upper left-hand side of the building reminds the viewer of humanities’ continued presence, and the patch of lonely yet defiant grass is a sad but hopeful indication of nature’s perseverance.
