Sometimes when I run out of inspiration, I take my camera and walk around the neighborhood. This scene is at the end of the road near my home. I have painted it several times. Of course, I've used some artistic license each time, but it's a great scene and changes with the seasons.

Thank you, John. It is interesting in that, as a child, my mother used to take me for long walks in the woods and have me look at the beauty of nature, and listen to wind blowing through the trees, birds singing, etc. That's probably why I'm a landscape painter.

One of my favorite artists, James Benning, teaches a class at the California Institute of the Arts called "Looking and Listening". On its surface, the course sounds straightforward: he takes students to the mountains and asks them to look and listen for an hour. However, this is far easier said than done, as evidenced in his film, 13 Lakes. 13 Lakes is composed of 13 unmoving, ten-minute shots of 13 lakes (sorry, the sentence sounds monotonous, but I don’t know how else to describe it). It is a tremendously challenging yet equally rewarding film that requires the viewer to focus the entirety of their attention on the present or succumb to boredom. Landscape painters like Joy Parks Coats are more than familiar with this attention. One cannot compose a painting like Marsh Cove without fully submerging themselves in the here and now. And more important than the beauty they offer is the desire they inspire to find our own. Marsh Cove is a reminder to stop and smell the roses.
