Rough Seas
This piece is from Fran O'Neil's class on abstracts at the Seattle Artist League. The limited palette includes phthalo blue and viridian, and other cool colors. I used a palette knife to apply wet on wet in one sitting.

Gee thanks, John. Very honored by your comments, as always!
For some reason this piece and the one I previously posted are showing upside down, although when I try to edit them they are right side up. I wonder how you viewed it...will check with Altamira tech support.

With its thick impasto, topographical passages of oil paint, and subdued palette Judith Skillman’s Rough Seas is a lovely and giving painting. Skillman strikes a surprising and impressive balance between deep colors, opaque applications of pigment, and translucent passages of activated whites. The richness of the white consuming most of the canvas is remarkably achieved while simultaneously maintaining a semitransparent appearance through which the blue, green, and purple brushstrokes can be seen. The impenetrable application of paint on the upper half of the painting does not clash with the diaphanous bottom half but compliments and fuses with it. The combination of gestural brushstrokes and dynamic applications of the palette knife creates a harmonious vortex that draws the viewer into every detail.
