Told in an abundance of thickly painted and kaleidoscopic brushstrokes, Kristen Olson Stone’s London Garden is an impressionist-inspired work with a robust fauvist palette. The rich impasto is in a league of its own. The daubs and dashes of thickly applied oil paint bring the painting into a physical space that flirts with three-dimensionality. The pigment consumes the canvas like the flowers and vegetation consume the urban garden it depicts. The density of the mark-making and the wealth of color further draw London Garden into any room it occupies and, accordingly, bring the viewer into the composition. The present work is undeniable proof that a painting does not require an imposing scale to impart an imposing presence.
