maria tabet’s Autoportraits is a beautiful work that communicates a clear message to me that is so subjective I'd like to make a particular point of not attributing it to the artist. When I look at the present work, I see a portrait of contemporary youth. The basic make-up of Autoportraits is as analog as painting gets. But a form of digitally injected humanism emerges from centuries-old combinations of oil, chalk, and pastel. The abstract and multi-colored lines that bisect various areas of the canvas look like visual aberrations of digital images. The richly painted and markedly organic face pears out of the picture with indications of technological emersion. Despite the rhetoric around humanity being consumed by technology (a lot of which I agree with or, at least, understand), natural and interpersonal relations with ourselves and others cannot be destroyed by cellphones and social media. As long as people communicate through artistic expression like Autoportraits, the internet doesn’t stand a chance against nature.
