Told in thick applications of oil paint and masterful gauges of the palette knife, Kristen Olson Stone’s Upcountry View is a charismatic and colorful landscape painting that harkens back to the impressionist movement at the turn of the last century. It is not the figurative nature of the work that gives it life but the emotion of the painterly expression. The thick impasto, rich colors, and heavy layering of pigment provide both a conceptual and material depth to Upcountry View. The three-dimensionality of the oil paint brings the work into any physical space it occupies, and the intentional yet gestural mark-making establishes the vista as not just an image but an experience. We can feel the rolling waves, the hills' dappled colors (what would photographically be far more tonally homogenous), and an overall sense of natural splendor. Impressionism is best understood as an artistic attempt to convey not just what something looked like but how it felt.
