Signals of The Universe
SIGNALS OF THE UNIVERSE is based on personal events in a short period of time related to falcons.
1- A friend wanted me to paint for him, a portrait of his hawk Rosie.
2- A hawk landed by my airplane window when the airplane was stranded at the airport in Traverse City, Michigan. I told my son, -Do you know what is that? What daddy is painting right now, a falcon.
3- I am in Elk Lake, Michigan painting the portrait of the falcon Rosie, and during those days I was reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho where two hawks fighting in the sky announce a war in the desert.
I decided to search for spiritual meanings of when a hawk appears in your life, so I develop this painting based on what I red. When the painting was finished my son tells me, -Daddy you forgot to paint a pyramid and I said, "I have not forgotten, look well.

This took me immediately back to the vinyl album covers in the 80s, specifically of the group Earth, Wind, and Fire, and even more specifically to their Greatest Hits album, which contains the same Egyptian "eye"-con, and a pyramid, but most strikingly the style and coloring. Really nice to see this type of "block" imaging as well, as many of your other works have that similarity. It's very individual to you, and I'm beginning to think that if I see it in the future I will recognize it as yours, most likely.
Most of the EW&Fire album covers are on this page: http://www.onemusicapi.com/artists/album-covers/Earth,-Wind-&-Fire.html

I appreciate your observation. Now that you mention it, I can see the connection with Earth, Wind and Fire. I am going to take a look to the page. Thank you.

Enigmatic and alluring, Carlos Mateu’s Signals of The Universe is a symmetrical figurative painting that straddles the line between surrealism and…well, everything else. The symmetry of the composition lends the picture an almost architectural appearance that recalls the pyramids of Giza. The work finds inspiration from several different cultures and religions: most prominently, Native American (the headdress sporting, half-hark, and half-man subject) and Egyptian (the eye of Horus radiating hieroglyphics, the rolling desert landscape, and the dual pyramid shape on the canvas).
The painting captures both night and day, representing the entirety of the world (or maybe even the universe!) on the surface of a single canvas. As usual, Mateu’s mark-making is highly detailed and perfectly executed. The rippling of the sands, the shading of the wings, the definition of the torso, and the iterations of blue composing the sky make Signals of The Universe an exemplar example of Mateu’s unique style.
