Is it a framed painting leaning against a wall? Or a mirror? Looks can be deceiving. How does the ball of twine on the floor go directly into the picture? And what is the dog looking at as it stares out at the ocean? Look a little closer and you'll see two figures, swimming in the waves. Truly there are some loose ends going on in this painting that with a proper story, might all be tied together.

Thomas Blood’s Loose Ends is a surrealist work that plays with perception. Still, I will hold off with the art historical analysis to consider the painting's content and emotional resonance. Particular objects feel more important than others. Certain things either follow us around for decades or define periods of our lives. Some pieces of ephemera we choose, and others are forced upon us by necessity, but their significance can always be noticed as we are constantly drowning in a storm of objects and those that stand out to us have a noticeable emotional effect. A discarded sneaker (even a spool of red twine) can take on an outsized presence because of the memories they evoke or because of their current place in our lives. These bits and pieces capture and define our lives; little monuments to the past and present.

Wow, John. This one kind of comes out of left field. (Maybe that's why you reviewed the painting featuring the Rawlings glove as well.) The whole point of this painting was to deal with Perception/Reality. There was a Rolling Stone campaign a long time ago based on those two words. Simply put, sometimes, things are not as they seem. And when you look a little closer, there's more to the story than you may have first initially thought!
