Hanger On's
Hanger On’s is part of a series depicting the female figure reading. I use subdued colors and loose brush strokes, as in most of my paintings, in order to create the mood and feel of spontaneity. Art buyers may see a symbolic reference to prominent 20th century American painters like George Bellows, John Sloan, Isabell Bishop, and Edward Hopper.

Beautiful painting rendered in expressive brush strokes. The painting captures the feel of a subway ride.

Told in gestural yet figurative brushstrokes, Darren Thompson’s Hanger On's is a richly painted and endearingly humanistic composition. While the painting is expressed from an observer’s point of view, and the subjects are strangers both to the artist and each other, it has a personal and sympathetic air that draws in the viewer. One does not need photorealistic renderings or closeup details of features to feel the humanity of a painting’s subjects if one is as skilled a painter as Thompson. The toned-down palette prevents the viewer from being distracted by kaleidoscopic colors and allows them to focus solely on the commuters and the emotional resonance of their demeanors. We see only a moment of these strangers' lives, but we get a lifetime of poignant sentiment from this fleeting snapshot. I find Hanger On's immensely alluring and beautifully human.
