joseph piccillo’s Towpath is a difficult to define abstract painting that could be interpreted as describing both a bucolic and urban setting. piccillo writes that the picture was inspired by a morning stroll alongside the foggy banks of a canal. With this in mind, I can see the waters and rich greenery peering out of the misty morning air. I can feel the tranquility of the scene. However, as someone born and raised in a city, who only recently transplanted to a more nature-rich environment, I see a city wall. I see layers upon layers of striped and peeling advertisements, their colors fading in different stages of decline. I have often thought of the abstract painterly nature of these haptically colored and collaged walls, and Towpath (despite its more countryside inspiration) has brought me back to them and caused me to further consider their unintentional artistic nature.
