The Death Mother
A term coined by Jungian analyst Marion Woodman. This archetype, a powerful aspect of the mother archetype that is dominated by the conviction that her children exist to serve her. She has so much deep, emotional control over her children that she can literally “turn them into stone”. Think, their own personal Medusa. Pigment and linseed oil.

It is hard to determine where jiro tcholakian’s The Death Mother begins and where it ends. Its origin and destination are as mysterious as its overlapping, swirling, flower-like forms. Whether one sees the vortex of a conch shell (and perhaps hears the simulated sound of the see whistling through its whirling skeleton) or the bud of a blooming flower, the work is decidedly organic. Despite its impenetrability and mysterious composition, the work radiates natural forms. It reminds me most (I'm going to say something very crazy here that I don't think people should say, but while it may not be consistent with my beliefs, it is with my tastes) of my favorite painting of all time, Jay DeFeo’s The Rose. If you look up the monumentally scaled, continuously painted for over seven years, nearly weighing a ton painting, you will know what I mean. They share an enigmatic wonder that stops you in your tracks.

Thank you John and thank you for introducing me to Jay Defoe, as a self thought painter who's only been painting for 4 years, I had never heard of her. What an inspiration ! very grateful.
