"Number One" was one of the first paintings (2008) the artist did using only workman's cement trowels in place of brushes. It's dynamic layered impact shared the name of one of Jackson Pollock's large works. It indicated the beginning of explorations of a whole new array of pure, painterly effects, replacing the symbolic signs and "lettering" of the pieces of the artist's "On the Borders of Language" paintings.
