Pompeii
Prior to visiting Pompeii, my expectation was that the experience would be about death. I was mistaken Pompeii is an astonishingly rich, colorful, surprisingly detailed record of life as it existed 2000 years ago. The painting, Pompeii began as an effort to meld my abstract work, which preceded it and the interiors which followed. With the marks of abstraction defining spaces and light. As always, I am drawn to the mystery of empty spaces that suggest a narrative to which we don't quite have access. In this case, the narrative took place more than 2000 years before.

Long lighting and rich depth/contrasts strikes immediately. Palette perfectly conveys an imminence. Very much a piece for our times.
